Enjoyed a mixed day of birding and working yesterday. Certainly nice to see the
sun two days in a row!
Joined the small mass of birders at the Lexington Neotropic Cormorant yesterday
morning. We did a reasonable job of social distancing, although sharing scopes
seems to be the primary issue! The corm was a very nice find by Dave and Lisa.
First chaseable one in the state since the multiple birds way out at Lake No. 9
in summer of 2011.
I worked on the farm mid-day, although I didn't encounter anything interesting
until late in the day when I realized that an oddly singing House Finch over my
head was actually a pretty male Purple Finch.
In the evening, Eric Hope and I went to the Melco Flood Retention Basin and
found single early Spotted Sandpiper and Dunlin, along with a couple of
Pectoral Sandpipers.
A NOTE ABOUT MELCO ... beginning today, Grade Lane is CLOSED at the RR tracks
right near the entrance to Melco. We have yet to figure out what is going to
happen there, but we think we are going to have to access Melco from the
*south* via Outer Loop. This construction is apparently not going to be
completed until late June . . .
With good habitat there and spring migration underway, there will be visits to
the site by me or others on most days. Anyone finding true rarities will be
passing word on to BIRDKY and we'll try to have some impromptu trips during
April. I am very sensitive to the fact that there are not many key holders, so
please let me know if you wish to meet someone there in coming weeks.
