I'm going to stop by after work tomorrow to look for this bird.
As a former long-time FL resident, Mottled Ducks are seen regularly there,
but so are birds of questionable parentage. Here is a link to an article by

and what we in FL would call "Muddled Ducks."

morning. Those photos were studied by a couple of associates of John
Brunjes (Ky. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources) who know Mottled Duck
well and their opinion is that it is a Mottled, possibly or probably from
the eastern population (thus not quite as dark as the TX birds).
There are a couple of issues with viewing the ducks it is with, not the
least of which is that they are quite skittish. Also, morning light is
problematic there. A walk around to the south side of the basin for better
light by a group would certainly scare the birds off, so Jamie and possibly
others will be at Melco tomorrow evening in hopes that it will still be
around.
A couple of us might go back tomorrow morning at some point to try for
additional photos, but we will be very careful to keep our distance so as
not to frighten the birds. This is going to be a little tricky to get
everyone who is interested in seeing the bird out there; it's not like it's
a shorebird that isn't going to get frightened by people out there.
ALSO ... keep in mind that the ID on this bird is considered tentative at
present.
