May 21, 2002: I spent about an hour at McElroy Lake late this afternoon. The lake is rising still and has enlarged significantly, though not to the size it was earlier this year. There was a nice flock of about 75 shorebirds composed mostly of Semipalmated Sandpipers with quite a few Semipalmated Plovers. Also within the flock were 1 Dunlin and 1 or 2 White-rumped Sandpipers. A Greater Yellowlegs was also present, but was not part of the flock. Annoyingly, the flock would not stay still for a good sift through. It flew every few minutes, only to land a few feet away from its original spot. The birds seemed to be sifting through the water as it was flowing into the pond, though they might have been exploring newly flooded land for emerging worms/grubs, etc. They clearly fed on something in the shallow/weedy area near the ditch. Waterfowl were low in number and included 38 Canada Geese, roughly 20 Mallards, roughly 10 Blue-winged Teal and 9 Wood Ducks, all drakes. A large ferrell/escape goose was also present. There were numerous swallows present including Bank Swallows. That concludes this report.
