I've visited a couple of the Purple Martin roosts during the past week.
The roost at Richmond was found by John Abrams about 10 days ago. It is south
off the Eastern Bypass and contains many thousands of other birds, primarily
European Starlings. Birders have not been given permission to park at the best
viewing spot so I cannot really put it out there, but if anyone would like
information on it, email me off listserv for the caveats to visiting.
Last night, Clay Bliznick, Lindsey McMahon, and I visited the Bowling Green
roost. Tom Durbin directed us to the location (thanks Tom), which is also in an
industrial park setting. The birds are roosting in a stand of Bradford pears on
the southeast side of Southwood Ct in front of the Bendix Spicer manufacturing
plant. This is west off Nashville Road south of the Natcher Parkway via Central
Ave.
The streets here appear to be public right-of-way. We pulled down Southwood a
bit past the pear trees, and turned right into the entrance to the Fort
Dearborn facility and parked on the shoulder.
I can never determine how many birds are in these roosts, but it is large and
not infiltrated by many blackbirds. There is excellent viewing of the birds
circling overhead and coming into the trees. The birds began to gather around
745 CDT and peak of activity was a few minutes on either side of 800 CDT.
