[birdky] RPT: Louisville gull roost, 2/02/2015

Several of us watched the gull roost form from the Indiana side, but then moved
to the Kentucky side as the sun began to show itself a little at sunset. At
least one different bird this evening, but some no shows, too.
Ring-billed Gull ... maybe 1000+
Herring Gull ... think I definitely saw more than 100 this evening
Great Black-backed Gull ... a first-year bird perched on driftwood right along
the IN shore found by Rand Falls, but it flew out into the river (probably
because I got too close trying to get pics) and we unfortunately never saw it
again. This bird is holding one foot up sort of like it is injured; Brian
Johnson noted the same bird and behavior on the Jeffersonville waterfront
yesterday or the day before.
Lesser Black-backed Gull ... two adults
Pale Thayer's Gull, dark Iceland Gull or Thayer's Gull x Iceland Gull
intergrade ... this first-year bird was very pale-bodied for a Thayer's, but
had primaries that were noticeably darker than the back; appeared to be the
size of a small Herring Gull. Closer look might change my mind, but I don't
think it is safely assignable to species.
We were surprised not to see either Glaucous Gull this evening; they'd been
putting on such nice shows on previous nights ...
Common Merganser ... again this evening, a pair came in to the roost, this time
with a pair of Red-breasteds.
