I spoke to the landfill owner today and he is receptive to the idea of
allowing birders access to the landfill. However, I still need to work with
him to establish a protocol so that we don't interfere with their operation
or jeopardize our safety (this is an active site with heavy equipment
operating near where we would be).
Once we have everything worked out (assuming it doesn't fall through), I
will communicate the results and protocol to everyone.
Thanks for your patience while we lay the foundation for what could be a
great partnership and opportunity for gull study in Kentucky.

Jokes aside, I agree with BPB that building such a relationship benefits
the birding community (think *Brownsville TX Landfill* and the
Tamaulipas Crows and Chihuahuan Ravens found there). Looking forward to

Yep, I found them. Wastepath has a landfill northwest of Calvert City,
near the TN River. I just drove out there and there are at least a thousand
gulls on the ground and hundreds more in the air and on the river.
The landfill is on Shar-Cal road, but getting close to the grounded
birds may be a problem because the landfill itself is set off from the road
a bit. I *might* be able to pull some strings and get access...I'll see
what I can do. If anyone seriously wants to check it out, let me know.
I snapped a few quick photos and will post them tonight and send the
link.
Or you can just come to my house and watch them fly over. :) Many of
them have been going directly over the backyard.

Was hoping some of the locals (Josh, Jeremy, Tammy, et al.) might be
able to solve a mystery that Clay and I were not successful at yesterday
morning. Between 645 and 700, we saw probably thousands of gulls streaming
west or west-northwest off the north end of Ky Lake headed to some unknown
destination to feed. I figured they were headed to the Paducah landfill,
but we discovered that it has been closed for some years and there are
only
a couple of garbage transfer stations in Paducah now, so that was a no go.
We saw them streaming over the Truck stop at exit 27 on I-24 and followed
at least some still heading west over the town of Calvert City. Last group
we saw was still headed northwest or west-northwest around "Cloud
Crossing"
[place name on gazetter). We could find no numbers at all along the lower
Tennessee River or the Ohio River near Paducah or up around Smithland Dam.
Wherever they are going, there is a really good number. I don't know if a
power plant on the IL side might be where they are headed or if there is
possibly a landfill on the IL side? If someone solved this mystery, it's
possible we there might be some thousands of gulls to look through.
On the return home, Clay and I met up with Mike Wright and Mickey
Greene and saw the Lake Peewee Pacific Loon.
