On Saturday I participated on the Reelfoot Lake, TN, CBC, covering the KY
sliver of the circle. I spent most of my time in and adjacent to the Long Point
Unit. Highlights of my 71 species included thousands of Greater White-fronted
and Snow Geese with a few Ross's mixed in as usual, but dabbling duck numbers
were somewhat disappointing. Bald Eagles were essentially in view the entire
day, either perched in trees or soaring overhead. I had *3* Orange-crowned
Warblers (2 at Long Point and 1 at Lake No. 9), a Le Conte's Sparrow at Long
Point, and a House Wren along the levee near the south end of Lake No. 9. Also
had 6 phoebes, 20 Winter Wrens, and 12 Brown Thrashers (all much more numerous
down that way than in n.-cen. KY). There were a lot of Lapland Lonspurs in
fields east of the south end of Lake No. 9, mostly seen coming to water that
was in flooded hunting areas, which is about the only water down in the
otherwise very dry for this time of year Lower Hickman Bottoms. I put 150 on
the list, but it was impossible to know if the flocks that continued to come in
for a drink were new or the same ....
On the way out at sunset, I ran across one of the larger flocks of Snow Geese I
have personally ever seen in KY. The birds were covering a strip of at least
1/2 mile of a disked corn field west of Sassafras Ridge. I have no idea how
many birds were in the group ............
