I've been spending a lot of time on the family farm recently.
Yesterday, while mowing hay, I noticed a big white blob in a snag by one one of
our ponds. *Finally* ... a long overdue Great Egret (Farm bird #227). It flew
away before I got finished, but it was back today for a few pics. I noticed
that it is #199 in eBird for the farm; I'll have to go back and enter a few
older reports to get over that benchmark.
Today while mowing hay I was riding along amidst a cloud of Barn Swallows and
Chimney Swifts. The red clover in the fields has LOTS of a small leafhopper on
it, and the aerialists love to eat them as they fly up from the activity. My
Tree Swallows (three nesting pairs) have already cleared out, but for a breif
time I saw one foraging amidst the hoard. Also one Northern Rough-winged. I've
been doing my best to dodge some baby meadowlarks in the fields.
The Chimney Swifts are feeding babies in the chimney at the house; so cool to
hear them chattering when the parents bring in food.
