I tagged along with Ruben, Victor, and Flynn Stoll yesterday to cover the
northeast sector of the Elkton (Todd/Logan Cos) CBC. It was a nice day with
light breeze and temps climbing into the middle 60s.
I think with a few "poached" species down at Guthrie Swamp, we tallied about 66
species. Our highlights were sparrows, with a group of 3 Vespers and a
Grasshopper topping the list. I missed seeing the latter well, but Victor first
spotted it and got Ruben on it before it buried itself in some cover. Waterfowl
were non-existent, although I see Joe Hall had some (and cranes) at John U.
Young Road Pond in Logan County. Count compiler, Alan Troyer, also had a stake
out White-eyed Vireo that apparently has been around.
The demise of the dairy industry in Kentucky certainly has been taken advantage
of by Barn Owls. We found one in an abandoned silo yesterday, and Alan had a
pair in one that has harbored them for a few years.
