Through a bit of a convoluted path, Pam Spaulding received word through
the friend of a friend that a Brown Pelican was on Doe Valley Lake today.
She was able to confirm the report and several of us went on a "chase" for
it, even though the bird had been seen from inside the "Members Only" area
on the lake.
Turns out, the white pole it sat on for most of the afternoon is clearly
visible from KY 933 where it crosses the dam. This is southwest of
Louisville and east of Brandenburg.
Brian Wulker mapped the location from which you can see the bird in eBird.
There is a large paved area along the highway that is bordered by a guard
rail to preclude access, but it seems you can safely park on the side of
Long Branch Road, just a few yards off KY 933. Then cross the highway and
hop the guardrail. No one was run off from scoping from this spot this
afternoon, so we presume it is OK to do so.
The bird was sitting on a white pole beyond and to the left of the obvious
condominiums overlooking the lake on the west side of the lake. You might
not see the post unless you walk to the left (east) on the big paved area
overlooking the lake. Pam also saw it fly around some and catch a few fish.
This bird's plumage is similar to the one that was photo'd on Barren River
Lake a couple of weeks ago . . . so it could be the same individual.
