Since it takes me almost a whole 10 minutes to get to KY Dam Village from the
house, I will continue to try to stop by there frequently and post any
interesting findings. So far the past week, just Caspian Terns and Spotted
Sandpipers, along with the usual suspects.
I'm Gull-challenged, but I'll do my best with those as well when my four year
old allows me to get out the scope without too much complaint.
Congrats on the nice haul yesterday.

Subject: [birdky] RPT: Dams & n. LBL vicinity, 4/23/2018 ... 24 spp warblers;
Willets ...
Clay Bliznick and I birded the dams area and northern LBL yesterday. We dodged
rain off and on all morning and met up with Jane & Pat Bell for awhile in the
afternoon.
We were hoping to run into some grounded shorebirds, but didn't find any until
late in the day, when we found 12 Willets on the breakwall at the Kuttawa Rec
Area marina. We scanned the Ky Dam Village beach and marina a few times during
the day, but didn't have any such luck over that way. For those who live down
around the area, a check or two of the Ky Dam Village beach each day this time
of year is warranted. The number of times grounded godwits, avocets, and
willets have turned up there is impressive.
We didn't find any other rare waterbirds, but did have at least 90 Caspian
Terns (combined beach and marina roof total) at Ky Dam Village, 2 different
Lesser Black-backed Gulls (marina roof), and a few Bonaparte's Gulls and
Forster's Terns; Herring Gulls were actually the most numerous with at least 60
counted scattered about. Also scattered Common Loons on the lake, but no odd
ball ducks. Still can't get used to seeing American White Pelicans here and
there all over the area. A check of the Barkley Dam tailwater in the afternoon
yielded some nice looks at more Forster's Terns, Bonaparte's Gulls, and another
Lesser Black-backed Gull (2nd year).
It's impossible to bird the area and not check out what is returning to the
woods this time of year, so we ran thru some of the favored spots in northern
LBL. Combined between a few different sites, we had a list of 24 warblers
(including chat, of course, which will remain a "warbler" to me until I am laid
to rest) by day's end. These included 2 Orange-crowned, a couple of Tennessees,
a Blackpoll, a few Northern Waterthrushes, 8-12 each of Nashville and
Black-throated Green, and most of the local nesters. Astonished to *not* see a
Baltimore Oriole, and not really many tanagers yet.
