Despite spraining my ankle earlier this week, I decided to walk the
trails at Camp Nelson this morning. It turned out to be a very
productive morning. Maybe being forced to hobble slowly helped.
The main enjoyment in the grass fields, of course, was listening to the
many Bobolinks displaying and chasing each other. We had Bobolinks just
down the road from our house growing up in Nova Scotia for a few years
before they disappeared from the area. Ever since I've had a special
fondness for their song.
I also had my first Dickcissel and Grasshopper Sparrow for the season in
the same area. I had my ears open for Henslow's Sparrows as well, but
never heard one.
The wooded area was ringing with Wood Thrush, Red-eyed Vireo, Ovenbird,
tanagers, and orioles. The warblers, on the other hand, were rather
quiet. But they were present, if one had the patience to locate them
without hearing them first. Here's where the slow hobbling helped ... I
had several first-of-the-season warblers, including a lovely bright
Cerulean Warbler.
Complete list can be seen here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S68330000
It was easily the highest species count I've ever had at Camp Nelson.
But I think I may spend the afternoon on the couch with my foot up ...
