Eddie Huber and I went in search of Snow Buntings in Boone County today. We got
to a field southeast of Petersburg (east of the cemetery) where we had had
several hundred Lapland Longspurs a couple of weeks ago just in time to see a
large flock of larks/longspurs swirling high into the sky with many birds
(including at least 4 Snow Buntings) departing to the north. We assumed some
sort of raptor had spooked them from their behavior. We killed some time
looking around some adjacent areas for awhile in hopes that some of the birds
might return. One gravel quarry lake had a nice assortment of waterfowl
including 3 Snow Geese and a Cackling Goose.
About an hour later, we returned to the initial field and were finally
successful in finding ONE female Snow Bunting with 100-150 Lapland Longspurs
and 50-100 Horned Larks. The numbers in the group were VERY difficult to judge
because of their manner of gradually moving from one section of the field to
another.
Later in the afternoon, we joined Brian Wulker north of the Ohio River in
western Hamilton County, OH, and found at least 4 Snow Buntings with another
large flock of longspurs and larks. According to Brian, buntings have been
diminishing in number each day since Monday, when flocks of up to 60 were seen
in Hamilton County.
