Five people participated on the Ballard County CBC yesterday. We had 87
species, I think. Water levels are just starting to come up from this fall's
drought, and we couldn't hardly find any diving ducks (pair of Hooded Mergs and
a single Ruddy was it!). Good representation of dabblers and geese, though.
Highlights included a small flock of Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks that is
lingering on a pond north of Kevil, two Barn Owls, a Merlin, a LeConte's
Sparrow, a small flock of Brewer's Blackbirds, and at least two Western
Meadowlarks with a flock of Easterns.
Besides a number of diving ducks, we missed several semi-regular birds
including both Cooper's Hawk, Great Horned Owl and Eastern Screech-Owl,
Northern Bobwhite, Pine and Palm Warbler, Loggerhead Shrike, American Pipit,
and House Wren.
