Eddie Huber, Matt Stickel, and I visited the Lexington Reservoirs this morning in hopes of seeing the Red-throated Loon. Unfortunately it was a no show, but the Red-necked Grebes stole the show. We met up with Scott Marsh & Rhonda Bryant in Lexington, and Jackie & Diane Elmore at Cedar Creek Lake. Highlights: Lex. Reservoir #3 (Lakeshore Drive): 10 Red-necked Grebes (7 on east; 3 on west), maybe 10 Horned Grebes, a few Common Goldeneye, 5 Red-br Mergansers, 10 Redheads, plus regulars Lex. Reservoir #4 (W of Richmond Road): at least 24 Red-necked Grebes, 8-10 Red-breasted Mergansers, 1 Bonaparte's Gull, 1 leucistic Ring-billed Gull that was almost entirely white, but had a limited amount of gray instead of black at the tips of the primaries. No telling what is down at the dam at the southwest end. Lex. Reservoir #4 (Jacobson Park side): 3 Red-necked Grebes including the prettiest one on the day and the closest looks; 4 Redheads, 1 Mute Swan Lake Linville, Rockcastle Co.: at least 12 Red-necked Grebes, 6-8 Red-breasted Mergansers, 4 White-winged Scoters (we must have missed one) Cedar Creek Lake, Lincoln Co.: Jackie & Diane know the lake well and we toured all of the nooks and crannies they were familiar with and *finally* found 1 then 3 more Red-necked Grebes down in the south end of the lake. Numerous boats all over the place with fishing season commencing. Also saw lots of American Coots, a few Horned Grebes, about 500 Ring-billed Gulls, 4 Red-breasted Mergansers, 20 or so Ruddy Ducks, and 2 Greater Scaup. On the return home, Eddie spotted us a Loggerhead Shrike along the Harrodsburg Bypass. bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== When posting on BIRDKY, please close posts with your first and last name and your address (city or county). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To post on BIRDKY, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS website at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos/default.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS Photo Page to view photos of birds recently sighted in Kentucky: http://www.flickr.com/groups/kentucky_ornithological_society/pool * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison.
