Only a blue jay or not, it didn't deserve to die like that. Hooray for Les!

Hi All,
Even though the only thing I could hear while eating breakfast in the second
floor sunroom were the sounds of the bullfrogs crocking, later I heard the
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO CALLING. They have been VERY vocal for the past few
weeks. Late yesterday I was surprised to hear a WOOD THRUSH because they have
usually left by this time. I have been hearing them in the same location in
the woods above my studio. Interestingly the calls have consisted mostly of
the threatening type rather than the melodic. I am anxious to see if the cool
weather is going to bring in any migrants this week-end. BTW we had an
interesting encounter with a couple of BLUE JAYS. I was standing by the
kitchen window and noticed two blue jays seeming to be fighting, no surprise,
right? I fetched my binoculars and looked at them again. Lo and behold one
blue jay was tangled up in some twine which was looped around it several
times and also looped around branches in the lilac bush. Les went outdoors to
aid the birds. As we all know, blue jays are a raucous lot, but the entangled
jay was very quiet and cooperative. It took about ten minutes to remove all
the entanglements. Les turned it loose and the second jay immediately
appeared to joined the now free one. I know, I know. It was ONLY a jay. But
male jays are wonderful mates and fathers, and all jays have fantastic
varieties of blue feathers.
Cheer,
