Today Jeanne Van Arsdall and I drove down the Shaker Ferry Rd to the KY River
to see wildflowers and bird a bit....the flowers were phenomenal! It was
also a magical birding moment when we first arrived and were birding the meadow
next to the parking lot which overlooks the river....Jeanne caught a glimpse of
yellow about 30 feet away and perched on top of one of Dr Wayne Davis's
legendary Prothonotary houses (Metamucil cylinder container) was an exquisite
Prothonotary Warbler with nesting material in it's beak! She had actually
helped Wayne install those nesting containers at Shaker Landing and check them
periodically at least 15 years ago! (Sadly, the bird flew off before we
could get a photo.)
Prothonotaries rank high as a species of 'Conservation Concern'. Central Ky
Audubon Society members have proudly constructed and deployed hundreds of PVC
nesting tubes for them since 2016. They are always looking for folks with
'swampy' or river property to host a nesting tube.
