The consensus is that this odd-but-lovely Hawk is more likely “just” a dark
morph juvenile calurus Red-tail and not a Harlan’s as I’d reported on Tuesday.
Thanks for the feedback folks!

Subject: Another Harlan’s Hawk near Schochoh
The other evening Debby showed me a hawk-in-flight photo that she’d snapped
out of the car window, on December 11, but hadn’t really looked at. Flickr
link follows.
When we zoomed in, we realized that it’s a Harlan’s Hawk (flying low over the
weedy field). It’s the in-flight photo I’d been wishing for, but this is not
the same streak-breasted Harlan’s that I photographed nearer to home in
November. This bird looks uniformly dark brown, except for the underwing
primaries. This spot is within 1/4 mile of the field where we repeatedly saw
a dark hawk, about a year ago, that we were unable to identify. It’s about
2.5 miles NW of Schochoh, near Whippoorwill Creek, along Hall’s Store Road.
