In case anyone is contemplating going to Red River Gorge soon, today was
phenomenal for good numbers of certain breeding warblers as well as
orchids. We saw over one hundred Showy Orchis in full bloom as well as
over one hundred Pink Lady's Slipper orchids just coming into full bloom.
Many other species of wildflowers were abundant. Among the ten different
warbler species heard/seen in our over five mile loop starting at Gray's
Arch, are the following:
5 Swainson's (most were in different locations, always in Rhododendron
habitat not far from water)
27 Hooded
14 Black and White
11 Black-throated Green
9 Pine
5 Worm-eating
3 Ovenbird
4 Northern Parula
2 Prairie
1 Louisiana Waterthrush
