Lana and birdky,

Many states throughout the midwest, including Kentucky, monitor the nests of reintroduced peregrines. Banding the young, when possible, is one component of the monitoring. The band scheme you observed is the typical protocol for peregrines under the current monitoring project.

The band on the right leg is the federal band; purple indicates a wild-born individual, while gold indicates an individual born in captivity. Few, if any, captive-bred peregrines are released in the midwest these days, so wild-born purple bands are certainly more likely to be encountered. The band on the left leg is actually a two-colored plastic band thats allows for "easier" identification at a distance. Most color bands currently placed on peregrines are black over green (although other combination do exist), with a letter or number on each color. If conditions are right, it is quite possible to observed the bands color pattern and read the letter/number combination.

There is an online database of all peregrines banded as a part of the Midwest Peregrine Falcon Restoration Project (http://www.midwestperegrine.umn.edu/), including those in Kentucky. As for the origins of the peregrine you observed, it is quite possibly one of the young peregrines hatched on the Ohio River bridge between Russell, KY, and Ironton, OH.

If anyone happens to observe the color band numbers from a peregrine in the state (or anywhere for that matter), please contact me and I'll be happy to give you any information on the history of the bird as well as report the information to the proper authorities.

Cheers,
