This morning, even though the temperature was mid-50s, a monarch fluttered by
above the treetops. Not long afterward, a Peregrine Falcon flew over, a few
hundred feet high, headed south. I was following the peregrine with my
binoculars, when he/she encountered a monarch. The two briefly became one
image, and then the peregrine continued south. I watched the monarch drift
down without fluttering, until it disappeared below the trees. I’m guessing
the peregrine briefly caught the monarch, which killed or disabled it.
