As someone who knew Lee for the probably the least amount of time among his
friends who have posted here, I am thankful that it was long enough to know
(though it took very little time with him) what a truly good guy he was. I
always looked forward to seeing him at KOS, where he always had a smile and
a kind word. And yes, he was a sharp birder, of course.
Counting myself lucky to have met and known Lee McNeely. My sincere
condolences to his family, his friends, and the birding community.

Whether or not you had birded with or knew Lee McNeely, you should know
that we have lost one of the nicest people and birder's you'd ever want to
meet. Lee has just lost a complicated battle with cancer, something many of
us knew was inevitable, but just trying to avoid thinking about.
When I first began birding with KOS in the mid-1970s, Lee was there. He
served as Treasurer of KOS for at least a couple of decades. I took a
number of special birding trips with Lee over the years.
Just can't put into words what a "wrong" thing this is to have happened to
such a nice guy. If nothing else, take away from such a thing that life is
short.
