A late afternoon drive over a wide area by several marsh/swamps and lakes:
noticed 5 Redheaded Woodies in the same end of the road swamp, all active
leaving their dead tree top perches, flying off, catching something and
returning to the same perch, over and over....similar to a Kingbird catch and
return in a field. The time was 1730 local, but if one hour earlier, and with a
big lens, the Red Heads would make great photos...a Green Heron was active
below one Woody. Couple of GE birds, two GB Herons and a pretty good look at a
Kingfisher from 400 ft away on a strip pit lake on the old Rockport road....no
Short Eared Owls, too early in the fall, as rarely see before late Nov....I
thought we would spot several Northern Harriers and may have seen one(?), but
too quick of a distant look, as may have been a vulture with a Merlin chasing??
A split second look.....KY Fish and Wildlife has a lot of wheat up and growing
in 12-18 ft. wide strips that once I read total 30 miles. This is a huge area.
The gravel roads are in good shape. No trash at all along the roads. Only two
other vehicles, non birders...oh, close to the S-2 high spot was a pickup of
camouflaged dove (?) hunters, so we did not pull in but, that is where we
wanted to park and look for Harriers.
