Could they have possibly been trumpeter swans? The reason I ask is that one of the the trumpeter swans we saw at Honker Dam in LBL last year also sporteda neck band that read 52N! If so, how neat to see it returning to the same general area this year. If I recall correctly, we saw those swans in mid-January last year. Here's the information that was reported back to me when I turned in the data: Mature with yellow neckband (52N) Species TRUMPETER SWAN Sex UNKNOWN Age of Bird WAS TOO YOUNG TO FLY WHEN BANDED IN 2009 Location BARRON, BARRON COUNTY, WISCONSIN, USA (COORDINATES: LAT: 45.41667; LON: - 91.91667 ) Bander RICHARD KAHL WISCONSIN DEPT NATURAL RESOURCES SCIENCE OPERATIONS CENTER 2801 PROGRESS ROAD MADISON WI 53716 Band Number 0619-36826 52N Banded 09/03/2009 I believe we saw this swan in a flock of about 14. Two other swans had legible nec k bands too. Here is the info on those swans too, if anyone is interested. If trumpeters are indeed back in the area, we'll be on the lookout for them again in LBL!!
