I have to make a correction of my partner’s post. They are “our” red-breasted
nuthatches! I’m fascinated by them. I was hanging up a bird feeder one day and
one of them (I think we have 2-3) landed on the tractor supply suet not 3 ft.
From me and gorged him/herself for what seemed an eternity while I stood
motionless, freezing, but awed until he/she left. When they first arrived here,
they did seem more timid around other feeder birds, but now, it’s just the
woodpeckers who are higher up in the “pecking” order. 😉

one, it does seem adept and persistent at getting to the feeders between the
bigger birds, and I do believe it might stash food when it gets the chance.

What may be the reason for the no show is the high activity of the other
birds. The Red-breasted Nuthaches seem to be way down on the pecking order.
They have only approached mine when there are no other birds on the feeders.
I’ve seen them hightail it when others come to eat and veer away when others
come in at the same time. Now that the street Mockingbird has taken up
residence on the feeders I may not see it again.

who hasn't had any trouble finding it!) . . .
