Most of the snow was gone in our fields by afternoon walk time, except on
pathways, where compaction kept it frozen. We had to pick a narrow spot to
cross a pond waterway which was flowing as if right after a big rain. Saw our
first Great Blue Heron here since the start of this cold snap. It was fishing
my one of my pond ice holes. Several Turkey Vultures in the air and a
Red-tailed Hawk on the ground with prey. Kestrel began harassing it. Near
normal kind of sightings. Plenty of Bluebirds here. My fields are full of
vegetation that penetrates the snow. Fencerows have lots of coral berries &
sumac. Neither are among birds’ ‘ice cream’ foods, but they will eat them when
nothing else is available, which was the case much of the past week.
