That’s a wonderful story, Eric! Thanks for being a great bird ambassador!

I decided to try a new to me park tonight after work so I went to Middle
Creek Park in Boone County. I’m not sure how I’ve missed this park since
moving up here last year but it’s a nice one that I’ll definitely be back to
soon.
I was nearing the end of my time on the various trails tonight when I heard
and eventually saw a Louisiana Waterthrush and had quite a few blue-gray
gnatcatchers flying in the trees overhead (where there was also a nest). I
could hear a loud group coming down the trail so I moved over to the side
some as I was listening to what else was around (also not wanting to draw
attention to the nest). The waterthrush flew into sight so I snapped a couple
of photos just as the loud “group” comes around the bend of the trail. It was
a dad and his young son of probably 6 or 7. The dad seeing me with my camera
stopped his son and began whispering to him to be quiet and that they were
going to take a different path to not disturb me. I turned to the father and
told him it was quite alright and that he had just as much of a right to be
there as I did. The boy asked what I was doing so I told him that I was
looking for birds.
He began asking questions and we all talked about spring migration and
warblers for probably 5-10 minutes. The boy was excited to learn more about
birds (primarily which ones we could hear at the moment) and then I could
hear a Kentucky Warbler nearby (one of my favorites). As I was looking around
trying to locate it the dad asked what it was. When I said “a Kentucky
warbler” the boy almost shouted with glee and said “dad they named one after
Kentucky!” and at that moment his Kentucky bird flew out to where we all got
a very nice view of it. He was absolutely thrilled to get to see the
“Kentucky warbly” as he called it. On our way back out of the park I showed
them the blue-gray gnatcatcher that was flying in and out of the nest and
then the waterthrush came back out for a visit.
Hopefully tonight will help spark an interest for them and maybe even
give them a nice father/son activity to do together. (I did pass on
information on joining groups such as the KOS if they wanted to learn
more about birds and birding)
