Hi All,
The Cornell Lab of O has recently released some new bird migration forecast
tools on their web site. This page is the main site:
http://birdcast.info
and this page has some background and info on how to use the site:
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/heres-how-to-use-the-new-migration-forecast-tools-from-birdcast/
The site has three day forecast maps of bird migration and live radar maps of
the past day’s migrations. The forecasts are based on weather forecasts,
historical migration records, and computer algorithms built by Cornell
researchers. The live migration maps use live data collected from about 150
weather radars across the US. I see four radars from Kentucky on their map.
One of the goals of this project is to reduce bird deaths from hitting windows
and wind turbines during migration. If peak migration times can be predicted in
advance the turbines and building lights could be turned off temporarily during
those times.
This is something new to check out.
