Lots of changes at the farm. Some undesirable ones -- I had the third
frost of the season last night ... the third! -- but last night also
brought in a bunch of new birds, including an assortment of sparrows.
The highlight by far was a very bright Nelson's Sparrow. It appeared to
be feeding on crabgrass seeds with a group of Field, Swamp, and Song
Sparrows. It was a pretty shy bird that tended to stay low and hidden,
and as soon as I tried to get closer to take an identifiable photo, it
flew into my neighbour's giant soybean field and disappeared.
I suspect that looking for it may quite likely be frustrating, given all
the places it can hide. But there are now a goodly number of other
sparrows around, so, if anyone would like to have a look around my farm,
just email me and I'll send you instructions. I'm administering a bunch
of midterm exams tomorrow and so won't be at the farm much, but, as long
as I have some advance notice, it should be possible to work something out.
