Next year is the BIG emergence for Brood X of the 17-year periodical cicadaa. A
relatively small number of members of this brood are emerging a year early and
Mississippi Kites may be honing in on the clusters of cicadas.

Jamie Baker has a woodland tract off Bardstown Road that has had up to at least
five foraging kites recently. This early cicada emergence could cause for some
concentrations of feeding kites and/or higher numbers in the eastern Louisville
metro area this year if there are any numbers of early-emerging cicadas.
This brood does not emerge in much abundance out past St. Matthews and Hikes
Point, so concentrations of kites may be in areas where local birders recall
big numbers of the orange-and-black "bugs" in the past (last emergence 2004).
