This morning at about 6:45, a heron flew up from the back field pond. From its
size and shape I’m pretty sure it was one of the night herons. It circled the
pond long enough for me to see that it had breast streakings. I attempted to
photograph it but all I managed to get was a blurry shot of it just before it
intersected with a tree line. Even in my poor photo, the bow shape of its wings
and lack of long trailing legs like one of the big herons are evident. I
circled back by this pond about a half hour later, hoping for its return. I
approached the pond in such a way that I would be nearly there before being
seen by anything present. Turned my camera on and zoomed in before taking the
last few steps. Looked all around the pond and saw nothing. The moment I turned
my camera off, a probable Coot flushed a few feet away and flew off. I say
probable because it looked awfully light colored for a coot. Might have been a
rail.
