This morning was special as soon as I walked outside. Birds were moving in
the trees, the air actually stirred with movement and sound. The tail end of
the front was pushing through with a whoosh. At first I was overwhelmed with
all the darting back and forth across the driveway. Then I began to focus on
the frenetic activity. Redstart sashaying through the branches of a young
oak, black and white warbler tearing at a rolled leaf, bay-breasted warbler
pulling a caterpillar from the underside of a leaf and subduing it on a limb,
male and female summer tanagers pausing alongside each other on a branch,
magnolia warbler fluttering out from a cedar, Blackburnian alighting on a
branch with its dimmer, now yellowish throat patch still making me catch my
breath, sleek red-eyed vireos grouped in a tree top, rose-breasted grosbeak
calling, now dressed in country gentleman’s brown tweed and faded pink ascot,
chestnut-sided warbler working the sun-lit tree line, head glowing the green
of a tennis ball, black-throated green warbler jumping up onto a thin locust,
still bright faced with a five o’clock shadow at his throat, Tennessee
warbler foraging among the frostweed. The soft, reedy call of a Swainson’s
thrush came from the forest edge. Looking up, turkey vultures circled. The
mottled underside of a large bird caught my eye — immature bald eagle.
Red-headed woodpecker sparkling in the sunshine, such crisp colors on this
favorite bird. As I walked toward my neighbor’s property and the KY River,
one more marvel. A mature eagle — sun glinting on head, then tail as it
turned slowly on the wind. I am truly blessed to have this day in my heart.
