Due to events probably inappropriate to share on this forum, I was already in a
besieged mindset which required carrying a sheathed machete for possible use as
self defense before this recent weather event happened. The cause of that
mindset has been resolved enough that I’ve actually begun making a few bird
observations. Despite no second sighting of a Harris’s Sparrow I saw in the
back field some time ago, I continue to carry along a seed packet each time I
go back there to check the cattle and cut ice. This morning, I began to
accumulate a train of bird followers as I picked my way by the herd accounting
for all. The moment I dumped out my seed packet, several Rusty Blackbirds
joined the usual group of White-crowned Sparrows with me no more than a step
away.
