Clouds and wind dampened the birding today, but not the turnout. The park
is mobbed with spring break visitors, including 17 who joined us on our
bird hike.
We followed that with a very brief look at Sloan's Crossing Pond; there's
been a very vocal Pied-billed Grebe over there. It was hollering its fluffy
head off, out in the middle of the pond. One thing I'd never
witnessed before: as it called, it was displaying by extending its neck and
flaring out its throat feathers. The little throat feathers made a very
visible extended black patch. Whatever gets the girlfriend in the mood.
Not much different on today's list, but any day you can give kids
binoculars and get them good looks at bluebirds and red-headed woodpeckers
is a good day.
