The pleasant temperatures this morning coaxed us onto the front porch to enjoy
the birds and butterflies flitting among the blooms. Serenaded by our resident
wood thrush down in the hollow, we watched some hot and heavy hummingbird
action. First the male did the pendulum-arc or what we call the U flight, back
and forth above his admirer. Then something we never saw before between male
and female, a short vertical flight with them facing each other while doing a
few synchronous head and bill moves that had me thinking of Uma and John in
Pulp Fiction. I guess this got them both hot and bothered because the next
thing you know he chased her into the zinnia patch next to the porch steps and
before I could even get my binoculars up to zoom in, he had his way with her.
She flew off after this brief (very) encounter, probably to register for baby
gifts. We saw him doing the U again later, but this time his intended was not
impressed and flew off.
