Japanese honeysuckle is a vine with shiny black berries. Bush honeysuckle
is the shrub with bright red berries that has taken over the forest
understory in the Bluegrass Region of the state.

I see the term "bush honeysuckle" frequently on BIRKY. Are we referring to
Japanese Honeysuckle or is there actually a species called bush honeysuckle?

Thanks

I saw a presentation several years ago where Louisville Parks was cutting
bush honeysuckle and applying herbicide to the cut surface to prevent
re-sprouting. I don't remember where, but maybe that is what happened? If
so, in a few years the regeneration of native plants should benefit birds
more than the bush honeysuckle.

Comments: It was a hot muggy morning, and not a great birding day. The
Louisville Parks department has clear cut alot of under brush leading up to
the swamp from the parking area, and I suspect many birds have lost their
nesting and feeding spots.
