A couple weeks ago I checked eBird for early dates for Louisiana
Waterthrush and decided that 16 March would be a good day to search for
them. So today I spent a couple hours around noon driving promising back
roads among ravines in northwest Pulaski County with no luck. As I was
returning home, a mere 1.5 mile from my house, I saw a spot that looked
better than any I had seen previously (duh, it is part of my favorite
patch) and immediately heard one bird calling as I opened my car door. Soon
a second individual called as well, and gave a single song. Very exciting
to see this species, as it indicates spring for me in a way that Tree
Swallows can’t quite compete with.
Another highlight today (Ansel, Pulaski Co.) was hearing a singing Winter
Wren while watching Belted Kingfishers go in and out of a nest burrow! I
had never before observed an active kingfisher nest site.
