Last night’s low was a toasty 10 and a warm up is proceeding. It was 24 when I
returned to middle meadow after pond ice breaking to try for a Longspur
picture. Got one. The initial Horned Lark flock I located decided to cross the
road into a grain field but another group remained. Reached for my binoculars
to scan the flock and found them absent. I had left them outside to prevent
them from fogging up when I returned to the house to get the scope, then
forgotten to retrieve them as I came back outside. Still was able to pick up
one longspur with a scope scan. When I downloaded my images, I could see that
the bird beside the Longspur was an American Pipit rather than another Horned
Lark.
Also feeder watched a couple of minutes and found the birds to be unusually
brave with snow on the ground.
