I did sort of a lazy man's version of a big day in west KY today. I wasn't
trying to maximize the species count, but instead to hit as many locations
as I could manage across the area. These included:
KY Dam SP Airport Road (Marshall)
KY Dam Marina (Marshall)
KY Dam (Marshall)
Barkley Dam (Lyon)
Lake Peewee (Hopkins)
Mahr Park (Hopkins) - Super nice place...first time I've been there.
Sloughs WMA Sauerheber Unit (Henderson)
Horseshoe Road (Henderson)
Sloughs WMA Highland Creek Unit (Henderson)
Camp Mines (Union)
Smithland Dam (Livingston)
Besides 4 Great Egrets at Peewee, I didn't really see anything unexpected,
but the overall highlight of the day was the amount of widespread raptor
activity (as Preston also mentioned in his earlier report from the greater
Browder metropolitan area). Raptor counts for the day:
3 Red-shouldered Hawk
7 Red-tailed Hawk
5 Buteo sp.
4 Bald Eagle (all at different locations)
7 American Kestrel
Many Turkey Vulture
5 Black Vulture
One other unusual note on the mammalian side, my total count for
White-tailed Deer for the day was only 2 greater than my combined count for
Sasquatch and Chupacabra.
I had a modest 40 species on the day, but didn't stop to look for or
identify anything that didn't jump out at me.
