Yesterday, October 26, was spent birding the
Kentucky/Barkley Lakes area, being joined by Hap
Chambers and Joe Tom Erwin for part of the day.
Highlights are as follows:

A parade of DC Cormorants flying south over Barkley
viewed from just north of the 68-80 bridge. There
were scattered strings of birds in the air for as far
as could be seen in either direction.

Approximately 25 White Pelicans below Smithland Dam,
and another 50 near Boyd's Landing on Barkley.

Two Common Loons above Barkley Dam.

A flock of 90+ Greater White-fronted Geese heading
west near Smithland Dam.

An increase in the number of divers above Barkley Dam
with Lesser Scaup, Redhead, Ring-necked, Ruddy, and
Bufflehead represented.

The apparently injured Common Merganser was present
along the rip-rap above Kentucky Dam, as was a Hooded
Merganser.

Small numbers of Dunlin, Least, and Pectoral
Sandpipers were observed on the Jonathan Creek and
Blood River mud flats.

A Franklin's Gull was present below Smithland Dam, and
two were seen above Kentucky Dam.

An incredible number of Forster's Terns have begun
using Jonathan Creek, with 260 counted from one spot
near the mud flats. A small bay toward the main lake
also hosted a nice flock of them for a total of
somewhere around 300. They were joined by Ring-billed,
Herring, and Bonaparte's Gulls.
