I made a quick trip to the scenic loop in northern LBL at lunch today,
thinking that last night’s south winds might be enough to deliver a few new
birds.
I had two first-of-year birds: blue-gray gnatcatcher and northern parula.
Also saw and heard a Louisiana waterthrush singing on territory in the same
spot as last weekend.
Highlight was a pair of phoebes that I watched for about 20 minutes while
they appeared to be looking for a place to build a nest near a stream. One
of them was gathering moss and carrying it around looking for a place to
put it. I could just hear him saying to his partner, “Do you just want me
to carry this around all day or what? Can you please make up your mind?!”
