Thanks for everyone’s input. I actually have a 1 terabyte external hard drive.
What the “computer gurus” tell me is they have moving parts and they can fail
and shouldn’t be used as a primary backup. They say the safest is obviously a
cloud back up.

I think Ronan is probably right that they don't want others using the photos.
Photos less than 10 MB can be uploaded to your checklist. I saved a photo
from one of my checklists and it was only 152 KB, but when I downloaded the
same photo from Macaulay Library it was 1.79 MB. You can only download your
own photos.

Not sure why they do it maybe it is a case of not wanting others to use the
photos but (from their website):
High resolution images are important because these photos are becoming part
of a permanent scientific archive at the Macaulay Library, and may be used
for computer vision learning. The higher the resolution of images uploaded,
the more useful they can be. Although images are displayed in checklists and
search at a smaller size than most uploads, the full-resolution original
uploaded image is always stored in the archive.
So even though they store the full size image they are not available to the
general user.

The PROBLEM with eBird (& McCauley Library where the images are stored) is
that they either downsize images or only accept a certain file size, so the
images presented in eBird lists (and I presume McCauley Library) can't be
zoomed to 100% to see all of the detail that is there. Flickr allows import
of images at full size, and in this day of digital technology, there can be
A LOT of detail that is lost in downsized images . . .
One case in point is the McElroy Lake White-faced Ibis this past April.
Rickey Shive got some documentary photos of that bird (thanks Rickey!), but
one can see far less detail in the eBird photo than his originals. This
makes review of documentary photos problematic in eBird if the originals
are not available elsewhere . . . .

For me when I post ebird images I use screenshots from my Flickr stream to
my iPad and load to ebird reports that way...it fairly easy for me.

I am tagging on to Brainard's note to say that any of the images purged
from Flickr accounts that happen also to be linked to eBird checklists will
likewise be gone from eBird. I know it's stating the obvious, but worth
mentioning anyway.
I'm watching to see whether eBird will notify affected users, or if users
will have to do so manually. If you know you'll be affected, you might
choose the proactive route to ensure your pictures remain where you choose
to have them.

Flickr has announced that it is going to limit the number of photos that
FREE members can store on the site to 1000. Anyone desiring to store and
display more than their most recent 1000 images will have to join at a
basic subscription level.
This will *not* affect the KOS Photo Gallery Flickr Group; my
understanding from communication with support staff is that groups will
not be required to have a subscription to maintain more than 1000 images.
The "groups" are just collections of images linked to and displayed there
by members (some free and some paying).
*However,* those images that are currently displayed on the Group photo
collection that would be purged from free members' accounts will also be
lost from the Group collection.
I looked thru the KOS Flickr member list and there are not many members
who will be affected by the new subscription (i.e. there are not many with
more than 1000 images who don't already pay to have a subscription). I
just wanted to make folks aware of this change and the fact that some of
our Group photos will probably disappear early in 2019 when the changes
take effect. Free Flickr members who have more than 1000 photos might want
to look thru their Photostream and make sure there are not images they
would like to keep on the KOS Group that will be purged.
