My sister in Madisonville says there is about a quarter inch thick layer of ice
on things in her neighborhood. Zero ice so far here in south Logan County. 3/4
inch of rain here last night. Probably another inch and a half so far of plain
rain but I didn’t put the gauge back out because I was afraid it might freeze
later in the day. It has not.
My feeder protocol might not pass inspection if feeder inspection was a thing.
My platform feeder is the lid from a metal trash can bolted to a threaded pipe
joint. To clean it, I simply unscrew it from the pipe and whack it against the
dogwood tree beside it. Several limestone bench rocks on the ground beneath it
are for ground feeding birds. Bench rocks might not be a thing most people
would normally find lying around. I didn’t find them on this place. Our farm
has zero exposed bench rocks. The neighboring farm to the north is highly
eroded and has many exposed bench rocks. I have ‘stolen” a few of them with the
help of a 6 foot pry bar and log rollers.

For anyone who gets a layer of ice today or tonight, get out and feed your
birds tomorrow. Please throw extra seeds on the ground, too. Small birds
especially need to eat almost constantly in cold weather, and even a thin
layer of ice can make their normal wild food inaccessible.
We lost a LOT of bluebirds locally last year when we iced up for a few days.
As soon as it stops precipitating, please get out there and restock them.
Stay warm,
