Black Rails one of the most difficult birds we have observed, as very tough to
get a good look, or photograph, and only 5-8 ft away, due to vegetation. But,
they did answer calls.
Least Bittern also a challenge, but in April they will dash between the
vegetation, briefly, in the open, while searching for food for young.
Birding challenges.

the King/Clapper type rail at Taylorsville Lake to a friend who I trust with
that kind of ID and he said that it would be unwise to try to call it one
species or another. He noted that eye color indicates that it is a young bird,
which complicates the ID. Plus, there are so many potential vagrant subspecies
of them that putting a tag on this bird would be just speculation without
measurements or DNA.
Ultimately it will be a decision for the Ky. Bird Records Committee to
determine, but because I had put Clapper Rail out there I wanted to post this
info.
