This is only my observation, but it seems to me that habitat is the reason for
multiples at a single feeder. In other words, if the habitat supports lots of
birds, you might see multiples at the same feeder.
Even with a yard full of native flowers, I might see two at the same feeder
toward the end of the season when they’re preparing for that flight home. I
suspect they may often be parent and offspring.
I see those swarms in areas where there’s little development and tons of great
habitat.
In other words, I think _most_ of us in normal developed neighborhoods probably
aren’t going to see swarms of them. The most I’ve counted in my own yard, at
one time, is 12 – and they were all over the place, not sharing a feeder.

I hardly ever see more than one on a feeder at the same time. They are so
territorial and really not very nice to each other! Amazing that they are
willing to expend all that energy chasing off other hummers. I don’t see them
chasing off downy or red-bellied woodpeckers, though.

seeing a large # of hummers, at one time, hundreds. You cannot count. There
will be crowds and the parking lot may be full, but I am sure the Hummers are

By the way "our" hummer daily count at Browder, KY is up to 10 at one time, w/
