First I want to comment that I was afraid the list serv was down or that our
computer had been hacked when Steve Tyson’s weekend report wasn’t in my inbox
this morning. The world feels a little more normal now that his report is in.
Bird wise, my only recent less than every day sighting was a Horned Owl perched
on a dead walnut by the barn when I first stepped out the back door well before
dawn this morning. I immediately went back inside and got my camera &
binoculars. As one might expect, it took off the moment I raised my binoculars
to get a better view.
At least 3 different Red-tailed Hawks are using various poles on this place for
hunting perches. Our 72 acre farm has a dozen power poles scattered around on
it. A few years ago, a surveyor for the power company did some work here and
said the power company intended to reroute the lines to run along the road
right of way. Then they did not do so. They put in all new poles on the exact
same route, which runs diagonally most to this farm’s length well away from
Wash Gunn Road and well away from the road on the line that roughly parallels
Watermelon Road. I’m happy with that. In cow pastures, almost zero ground is
lost from poles anyway, and they are frequently used by Kestrels, Red-tailed
Hawks and sometimes something more unusual.
