This morning a male Hooded Merganser and 4 female Hooded Mergansers accompanied a Mallard pair at Lesser 739 Pond. Two Wood Duck pairs hung out by the Cottonwood trees at Greater 739 Pond. I heard a Phoebe singing while walking from one pond to the other. The new renter has pushed out a sod waterway on the one hillside bordering the big pond, leaving no shoreline cover except the trees at one end and some weeds subject to dramatic shoreline shifts. This doesn't bode well for grebe nesting prospects.
