I've read that not all Red-winged blackbirds migrate, but mine go somewhere
during the winter months. I haven't seen the female yet, but she's not near as
noticeable or vocal as the male. And my male is back just today and as chatty
as ever.
I say they're "mine" because the male talks to us with that sharp trilling
sound when we sit in the front yard. He especially talks to us if we let the
suet cake feeders get low. And btw, we talk to him, too, and I swear, he
answers us!
I accept that this may not be my same individual as previous years, but if not,
then perhaps it is an offspring and learned behavior to talk to us and yell
when the feeders get low. All anecdotal info, I know, but it makes me so happy
when the birds return - and talk to me.
