I confirmed the Harlan’s Hawk, late this afternoon. It was sitting on a post
in a vast open area of corn stubble, southeast of the house. It was drying
its wings after the showers and occasionally tangling with a “regular”
Red-tail. It was that same antisocial behavior that first called my attention
to it, last year, on November 1.
It stayed on that post, this evening, until it was too dark for me to see it.
My reference books say that it probably summers in northern British Columbia,
or Alaska. I first noted a strange dark colored hawk in November, 2013.
Assuming this is the same bird, it has made seven seven-thousand mile (at
least) round-trips since then. I find that endlessly fascinating!
