Results from Saturday's BBC Field Trip to the Henderson Sloughs - Summary
and Checklists Below
Sunny skies, moderate temperatures, budding trees, and a couple of
butterfly sightings made it feel like spring at the Hensderson Sloughs.
Avian indicators of spring included several Tree swallows, a brown
thrasher, a small group of Sandhills migrating north, and a flock of lesser
yellowlegs. Other highlights from Sauerheber included many more bald eagles
sighted in the air, a good size flock of rusty blackbirds, good looks at a
red-headed woodpecker and 15 species of waterfowl.
Next we visited the Shorebird unit where we found a second large flock of
rusty blackbirds. We attempted to access the Horseshoe road and Jenny Hole
units, but roads leading there were still flooded. However, we did find
some farmland above water near Jenny Hole which we birded at the roadside.
Highlights from there included at least a dozen American pipits, another
pair of Bald Eagles, a vocalizing Barred Owl and a vocalizing Fish Crow. We
finished by heading back toward Anderson pond, which was low on waterfowl -
perhaps due to the presence of a pair of eagles on nest. Nearby was some
flooded private farmland that we again birded roadside. It was very
difficult to ID all of the hundreds of birds coming into roost there as the
daylight faded, but we managed to get good looks at a Redhead and a flock
of Northern Pintails flying over.
We totaled 64 species and had a fun day of birding! Thanks again to
